Car Of The Month - January
Adam Leigh's '72 Beetle

What better way to start 'Car of the Month', than with this beauty? A 1972 Beetle, bought in 2008 as a project, Adam has spent over 2 years lovingly restoring it to the condition you see here.

The final result is fully home-grown, with Adam and his old man taking on the project as keen amateurs. They stripped it out, cleaned it, cleaned it some more, and did all the prep-work themselves, sanding it back to bare-metal, barring a final rub-down by the spray shop. There has been a removal of the odd detail, and a smoothing or two, but you can look for these details yourselves.

Before the bug went off to the spray booth, Adam and his dad fully rebuilt the engine, going as far as to split the case, just in case there were any gremlins hiding in the stock 1300cc to bite them later. Cleaned heads, new gaskets all round, new carbs, pushrod tubes, bearings and fuel pump all help the internals stay internal.

After a respray in the original blue, Adam began re-fitting everything. Having cleaned up the running gear, and replacing everything that needed replacing, overhauling the whole braking system for new, replacing all cables, he went about setting the rear suspension down 2 splines, the front end getting an adjustable beam to get the stance that makes it look so good. To finish the look, euro bumpers, trim and EMPI 8's all got a fresh coat of gloss black.

You'll all be pleased to hear that it went straight through the MOT, and will be seen around Cumbria and Yorkshire for years to come.
